Family Business of the Year
The awards are organised by Family Business United (‘FBU’), the award-winning magazine and resource centre that champions and celebrates the family business sector. Now in their fourth year, these awards recognise the diversity, strength and depth of family firms across the UK and seek to highlight the contribution that family firms make to the UK economy.

As Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of FBU, explains,
"We were delighted to pull together such a vibrant bunch of family businesses for the 2016 FBOTY awards, some that have succeeded for numerous generations and continue to thrive, and others that are relatively young but have great values at the heart of what they do.”
“The Brend Hotel Group is an established family firm and they undertook a proactive campaign to get the support of the broader community to vote for them in these awards. The public really supported them and not only did they triumph in the National Award, they also took the South West People’s Choice category too. They are a great British family firm and truly deserve all the plaudits that winning this award brings."
John Brend, Managing Director of the Brend Hotel Group said:
"Needless to say, we’re delighted to be awarded ‘Family Business of the Year 2016’ and humbled by the abundance of support & votes we’ve received. As a family run business, we’re proud of our heritage. We’re all involved in the day-to-day running of our business in various roles. To date, four generations of the family have been involved in the business and there are still more to come through in future years; it’s a genuine family business. We all feel very lucky to be working in this industry and to be able to continue our family tradition of West Country hospitality and it is an honour to be recognised by an organisation that champions family-run businesses.”
Open to family firms of all generations, sizes and sectors, these awards recognise some outstanding family firms and really help to put family businesses on the map.
Penny Lovell, Head of Private Clients at Close Brothers Asset Management, one of the judges and the sponsors of the awards added,
"It is a privilege to support these awards and to find out more about the fantastic family firms that are the backbone of the UK economy. With the Brend Hotel Group there is a clear essence of being a family business at their core which really makes them stand out.”
“This is a remarkable family firm and a deserved winner of the title, and clearly a great ambassador for the family business sector in the UK too.”
The group’s latest accolade follows on from being crowned 'AA Hotel Group of the Year 2015-16' last October and the Belmont Hotel being voted in Trip Advisors Top 25 Hotels in the U.K. Next we're at the Red Ribbon Awards, organised by ‘Family Business Place’ for which the group has been nominated for and are finalists for the ‘Apprentice champion’ and ‘Best business to work for’ awards in the south-west category, fingers crossed!
We'd like to take the opportunity to thank you, our guests, for all of your support and votes.
